Introduction

Provide a brief introduction to your company, and explain the profile the company is looking for.

Qualitative questions

  • What position did the candidate have when working for/with you, that you are now basing your references on?
  • How close are you to the candidate?
  • What types of responsibilities and tasks do you believe the candidate handles well?
  • What types of responsibilities and tasks do you believe the candidate handles poorly?
  • How would you describe/summarize the candidate’s personality?
  • I will be the leader or close colleague of the candidate. What do I do to make sure this person becomes a high performer and is happy with the role?
  • Can you describe the candidate’s work performance?
  • Would you hire this candidate again?
  • Did (name) supervise other employees? How effectively? If I spoke to those employees, how do you think they would describe (name's) management style?
  • What was the candidate’s biggest accomplishment while working for your company?
  • Is there anything I haven't asked that you would like to share with me?

General questions for inspiration

  • Was the candidate accountable in performing tasks?
  • What are the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses?
  • What was it like to work with the candidate?
  • Did she/he get along well with management and co-workers?
  • Did (name) supervise other employees? How effectively? If I spoke to those employees, how do you think they would describe (name's) management style?
  • What was (name's) biggest accomplishment while working for your company?
  • If I describe the position we are hiring for to you, could you describe how good a fit you think (name) would be for the position?[a]

Other aspects of the candidate

  • Are you aware of any issues that have led the candidate to have excessive absence from work?
  • (Be careful to frame this questions correctly – if asked) Have you experienced or are you aware of any negative circumstances related to alcohol, drugs or others?
